Dental Implants

Dental implants are artificial roots (titanium) that are surgically placed into the upper or lower jaw bone by an oral surgeon, periodontist or general dentist. To these implants, porcelain crowns cans be attached. The teeth (crowns) attached to the implants are very natural looking and often enhance or restore a person's smile.

Dental implants are a great way to replace missing teeth and also provide a fixed solution to having removable partials or dentures. Implants have excellent retentive properties for stabilizing removable partials and dentures.

Dental implants are very strong, stable and durable. They will last many years if properly cleaned daily and routinely examined by your general dentist.

Reasons for dental implants:

  • Replace one or more missing teeth without affecting adjacent teeth
  • Resolve joint pain or bite problems caused by teeth shifting into missing tooth space
  • Restore a patient’s confident smile
  • Restore chewing, speech, and digestion
  • Restore or enhance facial tissues
  • Support a bridge or denture, making them more secure and comfortable

What procedures are involved for dental implants process?

The implants process requires a number of visits over several months.

X-rays and impressions (molds) are taken of the jaw and teeth to determine bone, gum tissue, and spacing available for an implant.  Once this is determined, the implant will be surgically placed and allowed to intergrate into the bone for up to six months. Upon integration, a second surgery will be required to place a predetermined attachment to the dental implant. To this attachment a porcelain crown or fixed bridge can be placed. A stabilizer can be placed in a removable prosthesis that will insure retention once placed on the dental implant attachment.

You will receive care instruction when your treatment is complete. Good oral hygiene, eating habits, and regular dental visits will aid in the life of your new implant.
